When I was a teenager, I didn’t really understand feminism besides the importance of creating equal opportunities for women and the importance of valuing housework. I thought our problems were legal and caused by a few powerful assholes who wouldn’t budge and some harassment.
I’m now in my mid-30s, and I think all men and a not small number of women are part of a brutal patriarchal system that teaches us from a very early age to accept abuse.
I mention the change because I was extraordinarily resistant to this analysis. I am one of the girls who has always been comfortable being one of the boys. I didn’t want to demonize my friends. I wanted to fit in.
