In honor of That Weird Holiday Before Black Friday, I'm going to tell y'all about something that's been rolling around my head for a while.
Being on a college campus has taught me a surprising amount about open world design and psychology.
Let's talk about it!
A lot of colleges/universities sell people on their particular institution by spotlighting the campus. "Your children will be learning in THIS incredible, stimulating environment," they tell dazzled, possibly nostalgic parents.
That's why orientation is so important.
It's a showcase. A surface-level flythrough of wonders both seen and yet to be discovered (but winked at). A promise that, here, the best is yet to come--all you have to do is look around you for evidence of that fact.
Games are doing the same thing.
