1/ As @Social_Cops hits its 5 yr mark, been thinking deeply about who we want to become, what will be our long-term competitive advantage etc etc. Been studying cos - usual suspects (@google, @airbnb) but also unusual suspects (McK, Unilever)
2/ Most older "unicorns" are built on a strong moat (Unilever = distribution channel, IBM = IP). The most fascinating case was @McKinsey (people-centric company, harder to defend) - yet, they are an enviable business - go to choice for worlds top CEOs, $350k avg revs/ employee.
3/ What was the McKinsey moat? The more I think about it, the more I realise that McKinsey has created a formidable "people" moat - an ability to attract, recruit and groom talent in a way that is almost impossible to replicate by a potential disruptor.
