Casual culture started before the internet — calling everyone by first names. Increasingly relaxed dress codes for flying, for school, for work, for eating out.
But the internet amplified that, like it amplifies everything.
There are a couple of bastions of formal culture still out there — finance and government are the big ones.
But the world has changed, and what used to come off as “warm, trustable paternal authority” has come to feel impersonal and uncaring.
