Is there a book about empathetic management out there? I suspect it would answer a lot of the manager-questions I get asked. @avflox and I were chatting and came up with some chapter titles:
Chapter 1: Everyone's a human. That includes you. Treat them accordingly.
Chapter 1 includes topics like "everyone needs a rest, sometimes unexpectedly, so structure your team with failover" and "no, really, that includes you. Take breaks so you can care better for the team"
and "treat each other with respect. Start with listening"
Chapter 2: Get everyone to use their words. It will save everyone a lot of drama.
(The number of times I've said "I'm always going to try to support you, but my psychic facilities are sadly inoperative so if you tell me what you want you may get better results" is... not zero.)
